Rewritten IV: Defiance

Laenyn became a Keshaan to protect her family--even at the cost of someone else's. But six years later, the fearless eyes of the woman she put to death still burn in her memory.

The ruin spread by her choice to obey haunts her. War and vengeance chase her in the night.

Obedience left blood on her hands; only defiance will wash them clean.
Early on in the book The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, the reader encounters this paragraph:

“Half a dozen brats turned with expressions of derision, and Lyra threw her cigarette down, recognizing the cue for a fight. Everyone's daemon instantly became warlike: each child was accompanied by fangs, or claws, or bristling fur, and Pantalaimon, contemptuous of the limited imaginations of these gyptian daemons, became a dragon the size of a deer hound.”

Which is very much in line with the Lyra we get to know throughout the book. Incredibly clever, quick-witted, a skilled liar, and highly imaginative--or so I thought.

“It wasn’t Lyra’s way to brood; she was a sanguine and practical child, and besides, she wasn’t imaginative. No one with much imagination would have thought seriously that it was possible to [spoiler redacted]; or, having thought it, an imaginative child would immediately have come up with several ways in which it was impossible. Being a practiced liar doesn’t mean you have a powerful imagination. Many good liars have no imagination at all; it’s that which gives their lies such wide-eyed conviction.”

I recall reading that first sentence several times, getting increasingly angry, and finally setting down the book. I wanted to shake the author and tell him that he was wrong about Lyra! She was imaginative and bright and brave all at once. She could be practical while having a keen imagination, and an imagination can counteract the bald logic that sometimes gets in the way of hope and action. I felt so angry that I didn't pick up the book for several days, and I still cringe when I read that paragraph.

Of course, as an author, I'd like to believe that I understand my characters better than anyone. But statements like that--telling as opposed to showing--can undermine a great deal of the characterization readers have inferred from your books. This is, of course, just my opinion; I've met plenty of people who agreed that Lyra was unimaginative. But I would have liked to make up my own mind about that, rather than having the author tell me what I should be taking away from the story.

I was in elementary school at the time, and I still felt that strongly about it, so I don't think children's or YA fiction should be any different in that regard.

Without a doubt, I am not perfect about avoiding telling. But I try to keep it as much out of my novels as I can. Showing what a character does is much more powerful. It's difficult to bite my tongue when characters make false assumptions, but all real people make those mistakes. It's part of why life can get so messy. I just hope that intent comes through for readers.

(Note: I've been feeling a bit better off and on lately, but I apologize if this entry is a bit incoherent. I probably ought to get a little more sleep, haha.)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-22470608094306170422013-06-26T11:42:00.000-07:002013-06-26T11:42:00.050-07:00GenresThis is an issue I've struggled with quite a bit while publishing. How do I categorize my Qol books? (For the purposes of this post, I'll be focusing on Fallacy, but Veracity and Evasion pose similar problems.)

When publishing, I have to select categories for my books. If I hop over to Amazon and pull up the Kindle ebook store, these are the subcategories listed under Science Fiction and Fantasy:

Science Fiction:

Adventure

Alien Invasion

Alternative History

Anthologies & Short Stories

Classics

Colonization

Cyberpunk

Dystopian

First Contact

Galactic Empire

Genetic Engineering

Hard Science Fiction

Metaphysical & Visionary

Military

Post-Apocalyptic

Space Exploration

Space Opera

Steampunk

Time Travel

TV, Movie, Video Game Adaptations

Fantasy:

Alternative History

Anthologies & Short Stories

Arthurian

Christian Fantasy

Classics

Coming of Age

Dark Fantasy

Epic

Fairy Tales

Historical

Metaphysical & Visionary

Myths & Legends

Paranormal & Urban

Superhero

Sword & Sorcery

(As a note, not all of these are available for selection when publishing through KDP.)

I would say that my books are fantasy. The setting is more geared toward fantasy, given the inherent magic of the Colors system as well as energy-magic. But fantasy often omits technology, while I attempt to fuse the two with my mad scientist, Jauge, and other elements in later books. (The tech angle will become more relevant still in the Delving arc, which is currently being rewritten.) Despite this fusion, it's not exactly Urban Fantasy--Fallacy certainly doesn't take place in an urban setting, although allusions are made to such locales. It's not our world with magic behind the scenes--our world's existence is called into question.

It wouldn't fall under the umbrella of Alternative History, Arthurian, Christian Fantasy, or Classics. Is it a Coming of Age story? Well, sort of. But aren't there aspects of that in any story with a young protagonist? I've called it Dark Fantasy before, but that genre is vague enough that I think everyone has a separate interpretation of it.

Epic Fantasy? No, no--that's too broad in scope for Fallacy, even if it might suit the wider worlds of Veracity and Evasion to some extent.

The other subcategories of Fantasy are also right out. They have too many archetypes I don't use.

So what are my Qol books?

They're a touch introspective, putting a lot of emphasis on choice and a character's individual agency as opposed to some grand scheme of fate. Magic is intrinsic to the world and its people, and I use that as a way to look at the underpinnings of society. The story shows a snowballing effect as one tragic decision leads to a vast array of unforeseen consequences--arguably for both better and worse. The characters keep secrets and make a lot of mistakes.

...Probably more than many readers realize, since I alone can shout at my screen at them as they make their bad decisions. "You idiot! If you turn left, you'll avoid (spoiler)!" "No, stop! That (spoiler) isn't actually contaminated, and time is more important than--argh!" "Move! Move, move, move! You can't actually (spoiler)--it won't work for reasons you won't understand until it's much too late!"

I don't want to say that I'm above genres, since I grew up reading the same tropes and storylines, myself. I've inevitably been influenced by the storytelling techniques I read about, even if I can't spot the specific connections. But I do struggle to affix any sort of label to my work. Unfortunately, labels are necessary for browsing readers! I know that I like to know what I'm getting before I invest any time and money in a series.

What are all of your thoughts on genres? Do you consider them useful? Have you found any particularly good ways to categorize your stories (or the stories of others)?

I recently decided to try out snowflaking--a writing process that runs rather counter to my typical strategies. Usually I start off with a concept, loosely outline it, then watch my characters bulldoze through my plans and make something far more interesting. On the plus side, my stories end up surprising me quite often, keeping me engaged, and developing naturally and organically. However, this method has a fair number of problems, as well: unanticipated plot holes, a great deal of rewriting (approximately four beginning-to-end drafts before hitting the final copy), and sometimes losing the story entirely, which results in more abandoned projects than I'd like.

So I'm trying out snowflaking! If you don't want to read the full summary at the link above, here's a short explanation: You start with your story in a nutshell--a single sentence explaining the concept. Then you turn that sentence into a paragraph, then each sentence in that paragraph into a paragraph of its own, until you have a fully-formed sketch of a story. (At which point you get to flesh it out and turn it into a proper novel.)

So I've been hammering out a concept for a superhero novel. Examples of my progress are under the cut:

One sentence:

A superheroine with the ability to reanimate dead/decayed plants teams up with a reformed supervillain who made her fortune crosswiring brains with super-powered pop music to enforce world peace in the face of a wacky misunderstanding.

One paragraph:

An emergency alert interrupts Morning Glory's battle with Miss Catonic, jeopardizing their safety and the safety of fans worldwide. They team up to fix a rogue superhuman's prank and stop thermonuclear war, but end up worsening the conflict by redirecting rage toward an actual micronation rather than an imaginary one. Internet phenomenon Tesh Wheatley contacts them to extend an offer to disarm the nuclear warheads, but the physics are too dangerous for her powers, and she nearly causes a meltdown in the bunker. They finally come across Latasha Newman, who can perfectly manipulate energy to mass without heat loss, but they're captured while sneaking into the base to disarm them and castigated for meddling in international affairs; this makes tensions mount even higher diplomatically, and time seems about to run out. Just after the bombs are launched, they break out of their holding cell and use the terrified assistance of Tomas Barreira to convert the energy back into mass at the moment of detonation for each of them, saving the world.

One page:

As she watches the news over her morning fruit salad, Lupe realizes that the pop sensation Eloise Evans--in town for one weekend only to conclude her most successful concert run yet--is secretly moonlighting as supervillainess Miss Catonic. Knowing that Eloise will drop off the radar between concert tours, she has to act fast: she immediately sets up a plan to gate crash the after-party, sneaking in as a maid because she’s often mistaken for one. She confronts Eloise, who tries to play her off--at least until she can get her mic to go for a wicked solo that sends Lupe on an involuntary acid trip. Mid-chorus, they’re interrupted by an emergency broadcast from the government over the radio announcing impending war (with a fictitious micronation) and the possible thermonuclear annihilation of the entire world.

Much to Lupe’s surprise, Eloise not only notices the miscommunication issue, but immediately cuts the fight short and demands that they work together to fix the misunderstanding. Lupe is reluctant, but she doesn’t have the ear of the president, so she hasn’t got a choice--they set out together for DC. They use Eloise’s contacts and resources to get them to the White House, arguing the entire way about Eloise’s expensive lifestyle and reckless disregard for her fanbase, etc. After they arrive but before Eloise can start in on her sweet talk, Lupe explains to the president that there’s no such place as (fictitious micronation), and the debate grows increasingly heated until the president misunderstands her and changes the target to (Eloise’s fanbase) and throws them off the premises.

They hunker down in Eloise’s secret lair--well, one of them--as they attempt to figure out how to fix the situation. As they fight about whose fault it was, internet phenomenon Tesh Wheatley hacks into Eloise’s laptop and cuts them off with a proposal in which she explains her gifts, what she’s done with them, and how she thinks she can help avert thermonuclear war. Eloise sends a helicopter to get her immediately, and they set out for the missile silo most likely to be used for the strike. They break in with a bit of song to befuddle the humans operating the security systems and get to the control room. Unfortunately, Tesh (Diana) is in way over her head, and she nearly causes a meltdown in the bunker.

As they escape, they’re captured by the feds and castigated for meddling in international affairs. The near meltdown and the perceived spy risk from their own superheroes drives tension to new heights, and Lupe fears that time is about to run out. Latasha is their guard, and Eloise bends her ear, giving Lupe the information she needs to take the lead and organize a plan to save the world. Lupe hashes out a strategy using each of their powers to defuse the bombs and resolve the situation. As they break out and race for the silo, however, the nukes are readied for launch and impossible to tamper with.

Eloise has one final contact--Tomas (aka Acrophobe, the Flying Brick)--whom she contacts immediately. Tesh rigs up a contraption to keep them all safe while flying while Lupe reconfigures their plan. Once set, Tesh tracks the nukes, Eloise uses her powers to keep Tomas afloat despite his terror, Lupe directs them to their targets, and Latasha gets ready to revert the energy to mass as they approach the detonating warheads. They get to the nukes in time, returning them to harmless mass, and avert the war. The US government pretends that the nukes were launched by mistake and promises to investigate, but the merry band of misfits are regarded as the heroes they are (and maybe the superhuman who caused the mistranslation steps up to join them).

All in all, I'm pretty intrigued with this style thus far. I know that it's a silly concept for a novel, but I'm enjoying playing around with it. It is, of course, extremely rough at the moment. If you like anything in particular about the story or characters, you should let me know! It's still at the stage where entire concepts could get cut out, so speak now or forever hold your peace.

As a caution, I'd like to remind everyone that sometimes stories don't pan out. There are plenty of novels I've written that never got off the ground even after putting fifty thousand words and several hundred hours into them. That's the nature of writing. So I can't guarantee that my works in progress will actually reach completion. If, however, you feel especially excited about one of them, please do let me know! That's the sort of motivation I can use to get through conceptual reworking and ground-up rewrites.

Here's where I currently stand:

Rewritten II: Veracity has been edited through chapter 15. I'm waiting on the editor to finish it; I'll then give it one last proofread before publication. (Estimating that'll be in late March at the soonest.)

Rewritten III: Evasion has been fully written and needs only to be edited.

Rewritten IV: Defiance has been fully written and needs only to be edited. It also needs a cover (which I've commissioned).

Return the Sea has been edited and formatted. It needs one last proofread before publication.

The Great Ships has been edited and formatted. It needs one last proofread before publication.

Cyclical is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs to be read aloud, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication.

Unlikely Places is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs to be read aloud, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication.

Through the Cracks is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs to be read aloud, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication.

Ill-Fitting is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs one scene to be rewritten, then it needs to be read aloud in its entirety, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication.

Shattered is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs three scenes to be rewritten, then it needs to be read aloud in its entirety, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication. If I'm dissatisfied with the quality of the stories, I may scrap the bundle and offer the solid story as a stand-alone.

Fallen Towers is approaching the final stages of editing. It needs to be read aloud, formatted, and proofread one last time before publication.

The Wastes has hit the two-thirds mark.

Unmaking is nearly complete; I'm deciding whether to include a few, final short stories.

Delving I: Control has hit the halfway point and been planned in detail from start to finish.

Delving II: Alter has been planned in detail from start to finish.

Delving III: Delete has been planned in detail from start to finish.

Fox Train has hit the halfway point and been planned in detail from start to finish.

Hitsuzen has been planned in detail from start to finish.

Fall Together Like Clockwork has been planned in detail from start to finish.

The Squeeze has been planned in detail from start to finish.

About 60 short stories have been planned for various Qol characters, depending upon demand.

Rough outlines for 5 alternate POV novels exist for Qol books.

As you can see, I've been a very busy bee the last few months! Unless otherwise noted, all of the above have cover drafts, though some need to be finalized. I have a lot of works in progress, but I've been updating my dropbox for backers on a daily basis--I'm always getting something done. I'm sorry for the delay thus far, but hopefully I'll begin releasing more stories very soon!

Also, I've contacted all backers who got back to me with bonus material and the like, so I think I'm managing fairly well on that front!

Thank you all so much for your support,

I'm immensely pleased with the results, and have been doing my very best to get rewards and bonuses out to backers immediately. Of course, I don't have final drafts just yet, but I should have those ready by the time the covers are done, at least. Hopefully it won't be too long before all of my stories are available!

In fact, I have a lot of stories in the works. I'm currently 151 pages into the first book of the sequel series that follows the Rewritten arc; at least two more books will follow it. In fact, I've split the sequel series into two series, so there may be three arcs altogether. I'm also aiming to write short stories mapping the lives of over seventy Qol characters from beginning to end, though these won't be available until after the novels are released to avoid spoilers. If people are interested, I would also like to write some of the novels from the perspectives of other characters to offer a different view of the events. Beyond these, I'm currently using a program called Aeon Timeline to organize all of the character stories; once all of the books are published, I'll make that file available for free.

So Qol is getting a lot of attention at the moment. Between six and ten more novels, seventy-some-odd character shorts, as many as six alternate perspective novels, and a timeline spanning over a hundred years are all in the works.

I've also been working on a series of novellas set in an alternate, steampunk version of the Meiji Restoration in Japan. Backers of my first KickStarter got to preview the first story of the set, but all subsequent stories will be fifteen chapters long--between 15,000 and 45,000 words (60 - 180 pages) total, depending on the story. I have them plotted out in detail, and I hope to have them written and edited by the end of the year. The working titles for these stories are: The Great Ships (short story), Hitsuzen, Sadame, Fox Train, The Squeeze, and Fall Together Like Clockwork. If these are successful, I may write even more of them--after all, I did over a thousand pages of research to get as accurate of information as possible for these!

I also have a collection of assorted short stories tentatively called Unmaking in the works. 90% of them have been written and edited as of right now; I plan to release them in bundles of three or four for $0.99 and then as a collection with all six or seven bundles (totalling about twenty stories) for $2.99. They're primarily retellings of old myths, fairy tales, and so forth, only placed in a range of settings from the creation of the universe to a post-apocalyptic wasteland. They should start coming out in the next several weeks, with any luck.

So, in summary, I have the following planned for release in 2013 and 2014:

6 Qol novels

70 Qol character short stories

6 bundles of other short stories (~20 stories altogether)

6 steampunk novellas

Total: currently estimating about 4000 book-sized pages. (May total anywhere from 2500 to 6000 pages, though, depending on numerous factors.)

Many of these are already written, and almost all of the others are planned in great detail, so I think that this may be doable. If I work as quickly as I did during November, I may have all of these written, edited, formatted, the and published with covers designed by yours truly by mid-2014 or sooner. Unless, of course, it turns out that a planned story is a total flop on the page--not all ideas pan out in the actual execution, after all.

The main setback that I've experienced thus far, though, is my own lack of confidence in myself. I struggle with marketing my stories, and I worry that people won't enjoy my books, even if I do. Though I understand that all authors encounter this particular predicament, I'm still figuring out how to overcome my nerves and actually hit the publish button. After all, a story is never really done. A point just comes when you're "editing sideways," as my friend, Hildred Billings, once put it. I may or may not be approaching that point on many of the stories in my queue.

But it's tough for me to identify that point with anything approaching confidence, as I want the books to be perfect. There's no such thing as perfection, of course, which lets me put off putting myself out there for indefinite amounts of time. I'm working on that right now, though--you'll all get to see when I hit that point, because I'll suddenly inundate all of you with several novels, short stories, and novellas all at once, most likely. Here's hoping that day will come soon!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me!

Now that I've wrapped up everything with my old KickStarter, I'm launching a new one! Check it out!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-63129429587894179482012-12-05T16:19:00.002-08:002012-12-05T16:19:54.191-08:00Rough DraftsThis is just a quick update to say that the rough drafts for all four of the books in the first arc of my Qol books are complete and are either with or being sent to editors right now. I'm working on a few novellas at the moment, all four of which will hopefully be complete by the end of the month. If I focus on editing until mid-March next year, I hope to be able to release a short story bundle, novella, or novel at least once every month for the remainder of the year. I'll be sure to keep you updated as I do so!

In other news, I'm not totally sure whether the second arc will go exactly as I'd expected. It depends on whether I end up deciding that a particular subplot needs to be cut. If it does, then the following story line will change rather drastically. That may result in fewer books being needed to wrap up all of the loose ends, but it may result in other subplots cropping up, so I can't say anything for sure just yet.

Regardless, I've been making great strides and am several months ahead of where I'd planned to be by this point. If you want to know more details, please feel free to ask! I'd be happy to elaborate.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-86584252886129545262012-11-23T09:00:00.005-08:002012-11-23T09:00:54.522-08:00Black Friday through Cyber Monday: FREE PromotionPendular Motion is available for free from now through Tuesday night at 11:59pm PST.

With that out of the way, November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). I've been hard at work this month, and I've not only finished rewriting book three ahead of schedule, but I've also written a lot of new short stories for a series of bundles (and, ultimately, a paperback) to be released over the next year.

If you're curious about my progress, you can track my daily word count here. Some days are more productive than others, but I've been progressing at a steady clip. If you want to convert the word count to a page count, 250 words per page is generally held as the standard, as I understand it.

For those interested in this month's project, I'll include summaries and sample covers under the cut.

Short story synopses in current order (*ed stories have already been written):

Weaving*: Unraveling the stars and reworking the spent fibers of time that connect all of the universe—again and again, the Weaver crafts the cloak of reality. Again and again, the cloak is flawed and must be remade.

The Box*: In the dark recesses of an echoing cave, a young girl finds a box. Do not open.

Still Waters*: There is peace in observing beauty. It is not a beautiful world.

Moon’s Child*: In the moonlight, she is whole. A pack of wolves at her back and an unerring bow make her queen of the night—invincible. She hunts by starlight and tears those who catch her to pieces.

Unseen*: Psyche is in love with someone she isn’t sure exists. Notes exchanged in the night connect her with C, whose only request is simple: You must never look at me.

From Dust*: All life is born of the earth. To love beauty—to be captivated by a form you yourself sculpted—is nothing so strange.

Stolen*: Do not eat of the land of the dead. Do not drink its waters. Do not try to save those suffering in the underworld. Nothing can be done for those in death’s cold grasp.

Idyllic*: Glory in life and glory in death.

Beyond*: Those who are neither heroes nor villains are as directionless in death as they were in life.

Fit the Crime*: During their lives, they sowed the bitter seeds of destruction, tainting the lives of those they touched. In death, they reap their harvest.

The Undertaker*: It has been so long since he heard songs of his homeland. But he knows the end of every story: a still heart and cold, empty eyes.

Sins of the Father*: Son of a god, he calls himself. When they come to dine with him, only his own flesh and blood is worthy of becoming the feast.

Better with Time: Kayla doesn’t believe in love at first sight. Everything worth having is worth waiting for.

Do Us Part: Kayla always did want to go first.

Unparted: The truest love never dies.

Discordant: Ellen finds the gaps in space and time and loses the thread of her own timeline.

Remade and Remembered: Second chances come at a dear price.

Through the Keyhole: Had you asked them before they set out, they would have said that they anticipated a glittering world free of the injustices and anti-science mindset that had plagued them in their own time. They would not have anticipated a world coming apart at its seams.

Awakening*: Julie has a talent for slipping unnoticed through a crowd, for fading out of sight while standing still and listening not ten feet from you. She hears a lot of secrets—she doesn’t share them.

Mundane*: Always, out of the corner of her eye, she spots them. They flicker out of sight before she can examine them: a magic she can never touch or reach.

The Nausea of Displacement*: Once, long ago, they belonged. Now they sit, dusty and disbelieved, in the musty corner of old attics or grimy street corners. Unwanted and forgotten.

Summer Pool*: Chlorine isn’t kind to her gills, but she’ll take what she can get.

Unbidden*: They never come when called.

Ill-begotten*: They prey on the human desire for contact—the need to be valued and desired. Their offspring are neither.

Cove Song*: In the end, all are drawn to the sea, willing or no.

Oasis*: The wastes glow at night, and sores spread across the skin of those exposed too long to the irradiated landscape. But there are bastions—safe harbors protecting those who survived. Learning to live again is hardest of all.

Chasing Shadows*: Long stretches of desert part the lingering pockets of human civilization. Not many venture far—those who do never return.

Shadows Turned: Mirages on the desert horizon turn nightmarish and tangible. To defend the last vestiges of human civilization, there’s nothing for it but to take a last stand.

Marred: Badly burned in the wars, she hides herself from those she knew before.

Fractured Glass: Nothing familiar can be reflected in a shattered mirror.

What Remains: Beneath the waves, the survivors hide and wait. An old magic has waited far longer, slowly turning to foam on the glowing shore.

Excerpt

"Weaving"

The Weaver ran her hands over the frayed ends of her cloak. So many loose ends—so many torn hems and patches worn thin. It held no heat any more, though it had once been wild and rich and vibrant. She had spent so many long eons crafting galaxies and nebulae that spread from the universe's heart.

A stunning, glittering cloak had faded to a cold, congealed mass. The Weaver unwound the tapestry, unraveling the stars and reworking the spent fibers of time and space that had bound all the matter into a coherent picture.

How many times had she woven reality? Each time it had been flawed—different patterns did little to change the inevitability of destruction. Despite this, the Weaver always took up and reused each strand again, binding hundreds, thousands, infinitesimal of realities into each atom.

Maybe the flaws were beautiful, in their own way. They distinguished each cloak she made for herself, defining it with rough edges and imperfect shapes. The cloth matted when she grew distracted from her knitting, forming dense pockets that tugged on and distorted the surrounding space. Many had been bright baubles before they'd turned themselves outside in. Pocked and still lovely.

Life spread throughout the universe beneath her fingertips, as it almost always did. The Weaver loved to watch life flicker into existence and spread. It began so slowly—just a breath and a pinch of earth. At that point, it was too touch-and-go to reliably thrive. Once it caught, though, it spread like fire across the surface of hundreds of thousands of planets. It took more forms than she could count over the course of her knitting sessions.

Some of the most powerful life forms dipped their hands into the fibrous bundle just beyond reality. They might draw themselves through gaps or bring forth reality-bending powers from universes that had once shone and now lay, dormant and perpetually hidden in sleep, within the twisted strands of her latest reality. Most often, they held a code of silence to avoid disturbing their less assuming neighbors.

The life sometimes acted to spite itself in perplexing ways. The Weaver she watched them often, fascination driving her to distraction. Some might offer her pleas, curses, bargains—when it suited her, she could nudge a strand or pull tight a loose seam, but there was often little she could do to fix the most minute of errors in the design without unraveling the fabric altogether.

As each life extinguished itself, she eased it back into the cloak itself to live again, albeit in a new form. What they experienced at death's was beyond her imagination; ageless and eternal, without a beginning or end, the Weaver found the in-between moments unfathomable. Each reformed in its own way—and sometimes that, too, was beyond her. The souls evaded her gaze, reappearing inexplicably in the wrong part of the cloak of reality or disappearing when nothing ought to truly vanish. The Weaver was scrupulous, and never left good material go unused.

Powerful beings developed near certain worlds, calling themselves gods and goddesses. They existed within the nooks and crannies of her fabric—the in-between spaces that so confounded her and eluded her attempts at smoothing. Some doted on their favorites and sternly judged those left wanting; others lived among them, indiscriminately spreading chaos and order; still others, much like her, merely watched. Their powers were varied, and each drew from a different, ineffable pocket of space-time to perform feats beyond the pattern she'd lain out before them. Out-of-place and out-of-time—powerless or powerful—she loved them all.

The Weaver laid aside her knitting needles and cocooned herself in her cloak, surrounding herself with uncountable galaxies that blossomed from the knotted core of her weave, extending as ever into the limitless distance. Someday, she would draw it back to her, ease the time-worn and unraveling ends, and build again. For now, she curled up and rested, watching the cloak unfold in ways that, delightfully, she had never intended.

All backers have now received their copies of the audiobook, which has also gone on sale on at least one website! As more go live, this site should be updated.

The audiobook is really strong, I think, and I feel honored to have worked with the people at Open Book Audio on this project! I hope that other people enjoy the results as much as I have.

All but the very last rewards have been fully taken care of! I'm still waiting on survey responses to fill the last of the rewards. With luck, I'll be able to fulfill those within 24 hours of hearing back from everyone! It has been incredibly exciting to go through this journey.

As this project finishes up, I might start using this blog to talk about other projects that I'm working on at any given moment. Some examples are under the cut.
I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) this year! I've decided to split my time between two projects and aim for 100k altogether for the month. In addition to continuing the Rewritten arc, I'll be writing a collection of short stories to hopefully be released throughout the next year. Some sample cover thumbnails are above.

With any luck, at least half of the shorts I come up with will be usable, and I'll be able to release short story bundles on a monthly basis next year. I'll do my best!

It really sounds incredible, and I'm very proud to have worked with Open Book Audio on this production. There are a handful of changes to make, but the book may be available within the next week or two!

I'll keep you all posted as this progresses! Please let me know if you have any questions.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-30933621913937540052012-10-27T18:51:00.000-07:002012-10-27T19:57:00.296-07:00Progress Report 16: Paperbacks sent, audiobook in review

What a day! I spent nine hours yesterday and today organizing and shipping the paperback packages. Everyone who gave me their address should expect their package by first class parcel post in the coming weeks. People from all over the world ordered copies, so I'm sorry that I can't give estimates! In general, I was told to expect 2~3 weeks to reach other countries, and then it depends on customs and that country's postal system. Not quite as fast as I'd hoped, but it would have cost far more money than I had to send them any faster. As it is, I covered the extra shipping costs myself on behalf of the backers.

It was an interesting and somewhat fun experience, but I almost certainly won't be doing it again!

In other news, today I received an edited/mastered copy of the audiobook to review! I've only listened to the first couple of chapters, but it sounds phenomenal. I'm going to begin again with the paperback in hand and follow along to check for errors. Hopefully I'll be able to get through the entire book by the end of the weekend!

The thing is, I have hearing problems, so I won't be able to do anything else while reviewing it, and it'll probably take me about twice the actual length of the audio to listen to it. Even so, I'm hoping to get through all of it by Monday. I'll keep you all updated!

Finally, every non-time sensitive backer who has responded to my survey has received their rewards! I still don't want to rush anyone; I just want to be sure that I deliver rewards ASAP after receiving the responses. If you haven't heard back from me and/or feel concerned, please do feel free to contact me any time!

For now, though, I'm off to work on proofing the audiobook!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-29671863486839897332012-10-26T15:32:00.001-07:002012-10-29T16:38:29.350-07:00Mini Update: Paperback PackagesI received the paperbacks for the packages! I'll be able to sign them later tonight. I'm not sure whether I'll be able to mail them out tomorrow (Saturday) or if I'll have to wait until Monday; it depends on whether I can purchase all of the shipping materials before the post ships tomorrow.

Regardless, you can rest assured that they'll be on their way by Monday night at the latest, barring some kind of unforeseen disaster! I'll update again once they're in the mail. If people who receive the packages could let me know when they receive them, it'd certainly be a load off of my mind.

This is the premise for Rewritten, a fantasy book series.
Rewritten I: Fallacy now has a GoodReads page! If you've read the book (as a backer), plan to read the book, or want to write a scathing review denouncing the book as a travesty, you now have a place to do so!

I'll officially release Fallacy this Thursday, so stay tuned!

Also, of those who responded to surveys, all rewards that don't have a timed element have been filled! Unfortunately, since not everyone has responded to the survey, it's not at 100% complete just yet. Soon, though! I've been managing a turnaround time of at most two days for getting digital rewards to people, which I hope has been prompt enough!

If anyone is dissatisfied with the quality of their reward, I wholeheartedly encourage them to contact me!

Also, the audiobooks are moving forward! Last night I received word that the edits have been rolling along, and everything is proceeding according to plan! With luck, backers will have their audiobooks not long after Halloween. There's no guaranteeing when the books will be available in various stores, as that's out of our hands. I'll try to keep you all posted!

Speaking of post, the paperbacks are on their way to me! I might have them as early as this Friday if I'm lucky enough to get them before the weekend. I'll then sign them immediately and ship out the packages the next business day after I receive them. (If they arrive on Friday, I'll ship them out on Saturday or Monday, depending on what's open.) I can't control the postal service, but I can do my best to get it into their hands ASAP.

Right now, I'm kind of in limbo. Every time something I can do personally crops up, I do it immediately. But most of the remaining work is out of my hands. It really feels like everything is wrapping up! I can't wait to see what next week brings.

For now, I'll try to get the next book ready and work on more short stories! If you need me for anything, you're always more than welcome to contact me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-20638440254188007742012-10-19T09:11:00.002-07:002012-10-19T09:11:50.413-07:00Progress Report 14: Rewards!

I sent out surveys to backers. Of the responses that I received, I've fulfilled all but two of them. (One of those two will be filled when the second book comes out; the other will be mailed out over the course of a year.) If you had any problem with your rewards, please don't hesitate to contact me!

There are still a few backers who haven't responded to the surveys. I'll try to fulfill their rewards as soon as possible after I hear back from them! I understand that some people would prefer to wait until they've read the first book before making such requests, so I don't want to rush anyone. I just want to be prompt in fulfilling my promises!

I haven't heard any progress reports on the audiobooks, but I'm confident that the editing is underway, and that backers will be able to listen to them before the year's end. They'll be available for sale, too, if you're not a backer and like audiobooks--I'll make sure to keep everyone posted.

Oh, last of all, the paperbacks for the paperback packages have been ordered! They're scheduled to arrive November 1 or so. As soon as they arrive, I'll sign them and ship them off.

Basically, I've been hard at work keeping up with my schedule, and I'm very close to being done, which is very exciting for me! If I hear back from the other backers in the next two weeks, there's a fair chance that I'll hit 100% completion on all of the tasks! (At which point I'll need a new list for the next books, haha.)

Make sure that you contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I'm always happy to clarify things if I've made them needlessly confusing. Or even if you just want more detail than I've offered. I hope you're all staying healthy as the seasons change!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-51180553746209517852012-10-17T15:40:00.002-07:002012-10-17T15:40:56.649-07:00Pendular Motion

I've just released a 99¢ bundle with three micro short stories. Backers had a chance to preview this collection before it went live, but now I've finished polishing it. The description is below the cut!

Just a quick update: I shared the ebooks with the backers, so all but 15% of the rewards are now filled!

I also received the final proof copy of the paperback, and it looks like it's entirely set to print! That means that both the ebooks and the paperbacks will be available as of October 25.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me! I'll keep chugging along, otherwise. So far, I'm well ahead of all of the schedules I promised, thankfully! Fingers crossed, I'll manage to maintain that momentum for a while yet.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885234810799280042.post-36751521615088751372012-10-10T17:38:00.003-07:002012-10-10T17:38:48.059-07:00Short StoriesI've been working on some short stories, and I'm hoping that working in other genres will develop my writing skills as a whole. At the moment, when not working on the third book in the series, I'm focusing on a small bundle with three pieces of flash fiction (altogether about 5200 words long). I'll be offering a copy of this bundle to my backers; it'll be waiting in the dropbox along with their copies of the ebook and possibly a couple of other short stories.

I've also been going over the short stories that interconnect with my series, and I'm thinking of releasing them one by one when they're no longer spoilers, then compiling them into one big book after all of the series has concluded. That would mean less waiting for readers between books, which might be a real benefit! It depends on what readers prefer, of course; I have several of the stories ready right now, but they have spoilers through the end of the second book, so I can't share them just yet.
As it is, though, I'm hard at work on the third book in the series and trying to produce as much quality work as I can! I've ordered the final proof copy to double check all of the details, and I have things set up so that I can send my readers their copies of the ebooks at any time. I'd send the ebooks out now, but I want to take a look at the proof first if at all possible. I want the ebook and paperback to be as similar as possible.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17702913564113748983noreply@blogger.com0
